Owl City…

Owl_City_Beach_1440x900

…is a shite name for a band. You would think that someone who deemed themselves to be gifted with enough creative talent to play their dross in public would perhaps be a little more inventive than that wouldn’t you? I mean, the band name is pretty much the first thing you notice about a band isn’t it? It makes requesting their latest seminal offering to wipe your arse with a lot easier, after all.

Here are some band names that I have just pulled from the front of my mind that crap all over that band name (in the interests of fairness too, I did that thing that free-writing thing that Haley Joel Osmond does right before he lets Brucey now he’s a deader…)…

Kill Hayley Joel Osmond
The Dead People
Bruce and The Demi Gods
Dead Girl Under The Bed
The Passed Sense
Your Pissing Bravado
You’re Dead Like Hayley’s Tamagotchi…

See it’s well easy, and I can’t even play the wooden block!

However, Tom Williams and The Boat IS a good name for a band…and they’re playing here…naturally.

The Joy Formidable

Remember this? I don’t. Looks like it was a lot of fun though.

Naive New Beaters

These loveable scamps are playing on our little stage tomorrow night! Amid their huge European tour, the cheeky Frenchman have found time to pop up to Kentish Town to parle for all you friendly folk – I think the least you can do is come on down and say hello, yeah?

This is a crazy little video for their latest single…

Q is for Quiz

QUIZ

To be honest all you guys will already know about the Flowerpot Quiz tonight, as I’m sure you got the email about it because you all are signed up to our mailing list aren’t you?! That, then, makes this post pretty irrelevant. However, I was so into the picture when I saw it that I wanted a chance to use it in my contributions to this fine establishment…

…in fact here it is again >>>>>>>>>>>>>

God I never get sick of that man’s face

Flowerblog is super excited…

about these dudes at the end of the month!!

NYE COUNTDOWN!

By the end of this video I wasn’t sure whether I was watching a party or a horror movie…but you can at least gauge the excitement of the wanton crowd that night!

Thanks to all who made it down to the Forum to see in the new year with us. Belter!

NYE Extravaganza!

nye nye nye

I know, I know! Flowerpot have given you too much this year – We had music from all corners of the globe, smiles that you’ll be remembering for years to come, and parties that you can’t remember the day after – but, we love you and we think you deserve it…so we’re giving you MORE!

New Years eve is a time for contemplation; a time for reflection; and a time for getting off your chops and making some bad decisions that you’ll come to regret far, far into the coming year! So, being the kind spirited folk that we are, we decided to give you a good venue and some incredible music to at least try and steer you in the right direction…

The HMV forum is the place…Mumford and sons, Everything Everything, Johnny Flynn, Pete Roe, Andrew Davie and (our main man) Beans On Toast are the people…YOU are the noise!!

Flowerpot knows that Thursday seems like a long way away, and the cold meat platters are growing ever more tiresome, so we thought we would get some feedback from some of the bands playing on the night about their NYE’s and this NYE and a bunch of other NYE crap in general – it’s always nice to find out what the better half think about things though, isn’t it?! Here are Pete Roe, Jeremy from Everything Everything and Johnny Flynn getting down to the brass taxes of the most retarded interview of the last year – HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pete Roe

What lyric would most accurately paint the picture of Pete Roe’s 2009?

On the road again
I just can’t wait to get on the road again
The life I love is music with my friends
And I can’t wait to get on the road again

- Willie Nelson

When have you been the happiest this year?

Well you hardly call it a craze but for some time people have been composing sentences that have the same word or sound repeated in them many times. Let me explain. For example if you had a friend who had an irrational fear of very intricate labyrinthine groups of buildings you could say, “He suffers from a complex complex complex”. These types of sentences are called “pundittos”. There’s a good one where ‘and’ appears five times in a row and one where ‘had’ appears eleven times in a row. However I was very pleased to have composed an infinite phonetic punditto which goes as follows:

Two men had been fighting in the street every night for what seemed like forever. The first fight had ended in a draw with a simultaneous knock out so they had agreed to settle the fisticuffs with another boxing match the next night. This in-turn ended in a draw and so on and so on….

When asked why they were fighting they explained that it was a bout about a bout about a bout…..Also I won a hamper of tea in raffle.

Who has been the most important person in the making of your year?

Meeting Neil Young was a real privilege.

What do you love the most about NYE?

The half past midnight phone call from my very drunk mother.

Jeremy, Everything Everything

Did you guys get everything you wished for this year?

Yes. And more. Including some stuff we didn’t wish for… But it’s been an amazing year. A good limbering-up for 0h! Ten, which promises to be all the more hectic.

What has been the soundtrack to your 2009?

Wild Beasts. Dirty Projectors. The usuals, basically. I’ve also been re-re-reimmursing myself in the Blur back-catalogue since seeing them in Hyde Park. My first love.

What news resolutions did you completely break this year?

The same I break every year: Drink less, don’t be a dick. Failed on both counts, naturally.

What are you most excited about for the NYE party?

Just playing a great big old venue (where I once saw my beloved Slint) to a massive crowd of people wanting to have a good time. Simple really. Simple is best.

Johnny Flynn

What’s been the most amazing thing that’s happened to Johnny Flynn in 2009?

i walked 400km across northern spain on my own with a tent in october… that was pretty amazing.

Why did you decide to play our little show this NYE?

free booze… er kidding…. old friends AND free booze. i guess you’re gonna be with your friends whatever happens on NYE – might as well get the free booze too.

What do you love most about NYE?

seeing other people that are more destroyed than me… and the feeling of FINALLY finding a good house party… and the feeling in london that the whole city aquires the atmosphere of a festival for one night – you see the absolute best and extreme worst in strangers…

What is the worst NYE you’ve ever had?

probably the ones when i was young and had to go to my parents friends’ parties…but the last few years i’ve lucked out.

Flowerpot Christmas Party

dead santa

Holy Fuck! I woke up this morning, with a stonking headache, and suddenly realised that Christmas is only 6 days away! It’s that time of year where dreams come true…it’s also the time of year where your so fucking drunk that you do something to seriously jepordise your testicles with a rather vicious looking sprig of holly and/or get left in the gutter by some Father Christmas imposter to get hyperthermia – either way it’s PARTYTIME!!

The things I love about Christmas:

1: Booze
2: Green clothed midgets
3: Presents
4: Drunk women
5: Decadence

FP have got them all in abundance and, as it’s Black Friday (!!!!!), I’ll be buying anyone who taps we on the shoulder and yells “Tinsel my tits, motherfucker!” a healthy measure of egg nog/vodka!! So, if you can find me, then I’ll make your liver feel like it’s the last nightmare before Christmas!!! Merry Tidings everybody!

Flowerblog: Interview with Telegrams

telegrams 1

This is all my fault. This interview was meant to be a lovely little introduction to one of my personal favourite bands who has played on our stage in recent month, Telegrams, but instead I spent the weekend throwing incalcuable quantities of horrible booze down my kneck and spoiling my chances of future happiness, whilst this delightful reparte was left languishing in my inbox. What an A grade chopper I really am. It could kinda work though, as for all you people in the know, the guys played a great set in front of the FP massive on Friday and this could now be kinda a get-to-know-your-new-heroes-better sort of a session. So, for anyone that bothers to pay attention to the drivel I write of our friendly blog, read on to find out what Julian from the band had to say to some poorly worded, pedigree tripe that I left for him to get back to me about. Seems like a good old boy…be a fan on Facebook?

How did Telegrams form?

Alex (keyboards) and I were at school together and we found Ben (drums) on the internet. Turns out we all went to the same uni. Adam (bass) joined us a bit later but, as it happens, he’s Alex’s older brother, which was also convenient.

What influences do you all think were the most important when writing your songs?

A lot of the songs have been knocking around for quite some time and I actually wrote them ages ago when I was travelling in Latin America, swanning about with a guitar on my back. But getting the arrangements how we wanted them happened slowly over time. I can’t really say for the others, but I tend to sway between dark american indie-folk like Sufjan Stevens, Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy or Bowerbirds, and old british electronica a la Aphex Twin. I know Alex likes Decemberists and The National though.

What is your favourite thing about playing live music?

When a show goes badly, often you feel like you want to kill yourself afterwards… but when it goes well or we get a really good audience it can keep a big grin on my face for days, or until people tell me to stop grinning. It creeps them out apparently.

What song would you say you all love more than any other?

Which song of ours? I think we have different favourites, but these days we usually end our set with a song called Make It All Stand Still, which is a kind of conga-driven folk/synth rocker. I get to make some nasty noises with my guitar near the end, so it’s particularly fun for me.

What do you think of British independent music right now?

Alive and well! We’ve been lucky that in the year and a half we’ve spent gigging around london, we’ve played with some excellent bands, like Wave Machines and Stornoway.

Have you ever sent a telegram?

No but it’s about time for a revival. What could be better than sending a telegram? Apart from an email? Or a text? Or calling on the phone?

No! Who would you send a telegram too then?!

Right now probably Santa, as royal mail’s a bit stuffed and I desperately need some new glasses.

For those of you who like added media functions, then you can also catch up with more stuff from the band at the following stations:

Detroit Social Club on Wednesday at the Flowerpot!

detroitsocialclubpressL71209

So, it’s nearly Wednesday. It’s a special sort of a day. The hangovers of Monday have worn off, suicide Tuesday has been survived, and it’s only another couple of days before Friday! With this in mind, Flowerpot thought we would help you celebrate with more musical enchantment and midweek merriment in the form of Detroit Social Club!

The band are doing a handful (well, 6) of dates this month and, as usual, the ol’ FP has snatched them up for one and all to come and watch for FREE! NME is pretty excited about it too – they got the guys to supply them with a free track, which you can download here. Come down and hear more LIVE!
